Lights and dark nights

Well, the lights have had a couple of outings now and I can say that I am very pleased with them.
The spread is good allowing you to see what you are missing around you, whilst the throw ahead is excellent. I will upload some photos later.
My only concern is that they are held on the handle bars by a rubber band that allows a great deal of wobble. Coming down hill fast can be fun when your lights are strobing! My solution has been to underslung them on the bars, its not perfect but its much better.
The battery life is supposed to be ten hours on the lowest setting and about two on the highest. It took about one hour forty for the battery indicator to go from green to blue, on the full setting, never seen red yet.
So far so good!

The dark nights are drawing in!

Well, with the winter on it’s way and the clocks doing their thing in only a few weeks time, it’s time to think about lighting the way home.
This will be my second season of night riding, I had borrowed a set of lights from one of my riding buddies. Not wanting to overdo on his hospitality I have decided to buy my own.
After much research and trawling of the forums I came across a set that were less than half the price of the competition but appear to offer a better spec!
I plumed for the magicshine 816 1400 lumen model. That’s equivalent to some car head lights on main beam! They are up for £92 on the magicshine site, but I found them for £82 on the BestOfferBuy site. I haven’t had a chance to use them yet but will let you know how I get on.

Osmotherley (take two)

This is the second ride that starts in Osmotherley.

  1. From Osmotherley, follow the road up the hill
  2. Pass the reservoir on your right
  3. Follow the road, passing two car parks until a gated track is seen on the RHS
  4. Follow the easy to follow path through the trees
  5. At a panoramic view of Cleveland the path runs down steps, off to the left of the track you were on
  6. at the bottom of the steps turn right in front of a gate to follow the Cleveland way
  7. At a Cleveland Way sign cross a field down hill to reach a road
  8. Follow the road through a small ford and right for a steady up hill to reach a farm on the RHS
  9. Turn right at the farm and go through the gate then down to reach a small foot bridge
  10. Follow the path to the right, through another gate, up into the trees
  11. You soon come to a crossroads, carry straight on for a steep up hill
  12. At the top of the hill you rejoin the track you started on and quickly reach the main road again
  13. Turn left (you could continue back to Osmotherley, but don’t!)
  14. After a short distance a track double backs on the right, follow this uphill
  15. The route again gives great views across the Tees Valley before turning left and follows stones towards the tree line
  16. Once the trees are reached go through the gate, turn left and follow the track by the wall to reach a road
  17. Follow the road quickly down hill to reach the main road, right, to Osmotherley

9.3 miles about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Let me know what you think.

Cod Beck Reservoir and Sheepwash

This is the first of two mountain bike rides that start close to Cod Beck reservoir, Osmotherley. This one brings you back via a gully called Sheepwash and has a long steep climb, the other that I will post later also has a climb but forms a figure eight.

  1. From Osmotherley park in the second car park
  2. Follow the road right, out of the car park until a gated track is seen on the RHS
  3. Follow the easy to follow path through the trees
  4. At a Cleveland Way sign cross a field down hill to reach a road
  5. Follow the road through a small ford and right for a steady up hill to reach a farm on the RHS
  6. Turn right at the farm and go through the gate then down to reach a small foot bridge
  7. Follow the path to the right, through another gate, up into the trees
  8. You soon come to a cross roads, turn sharp left on yourself for a steep up hill
  9. At the top of the hill is a gate, go through this and continue for a short distance
  10. On the right you reach another sharp turn back on yourself for a steady climb towards the trees
  11. Look to the left and, close to where the trees run out, follow the second track that you come to
  12. The path runs away down hill from the trees, rapidly picking up speed
  13. away in front and slightly to the left you can see the reservoir, follow until the path meets a sharp drop back to the carpark

6.7 miles about 1 hour 20 minutes.

Let me know what you think.

Biking round Masham

Last night was a wet night up on the moors around Masham. It started clear but soon deteriorated to torrential rain!

It was a simple enough ride of about 13 miles that has several short climbs, just enough to get out of breath. It is easy to follow:

  1. Masham centre
  2. Grewelthorpe, there is a tee junction here, take the right and then follow the lane round to the left
  3. Keep straight on for an undulating climb to the top of the moor
  4. Sharp right back on yourself for a quick run back down into Masham
  5. Pint or coffee in the Kings Head

The Kings Head looks to be nice for a meal, will have to give it a visit some time for eats.

Hello the Tees Valley

Welcome to Theteesvalley.me.uk. This is my first post. Over the coming posts I’ll be looking at the Tees Valley as a starting point for activities and news, so not all posts will be related. Much will be covering my hobbies of mountain biking and diving. Please feel free to comment and pass on to others.
